Silverfish control

Silverfish don’t bite, but they’ll quietly ruin books, photos, stored clothes and boxed paper, and they thrive in the humid coastal climate. They live in dark, undisturbed voids, so the treatment that works is one that reaches the roof void, wall cavities and cupboard backs, not just a surface spray.

Signs you have them

How to tell it’s silverfish.

  • Silvery, fish-shaped insects in cupboards, bookshelves or the bathroom
  • Yellow stains, scales or small holes on paper, books and fabric
  • Activity in stored boxes, especially paper and cardboard
  • More of them through humid months
How we treat it

Our approach to silverfish.

We treat the voids and harbourage where silverfish breed, the roof void, wall cavities, cupboard backs and storage areas, with a residual and, where useful, a dust into the cavities. Reducing humidity and clutter in storage areas is the long-term half of it, which we’ll talk through.

Safety: APVMA-registered products, child and pet safe once dry. Dusts go into voids and cavities, away from living space.

Silverfish is treated as part of our general pest treatment service.

Questions, answered

Silverfish, common questions.

Are silverfish actually harmful? +
Not to people or pets, they don’t bite or spread disease. The damage is to your belongings: they feed on paper, glue, book bindings, photos and natural fabrics, so the harm is to books, documents and stored clothing rather than your health.
Why do I have so many silverfish on the coast? +
They love humidity and dark, undisturbed spaces, and the coastal climate suits them. Roof voids, bathrooms, storage boxes and bookshelves are classic spots. Reducing humidity and clutter helps, but an established population needs the voids treated.
Will a surface spray fix it? +
Not for long. Silverfish breed in voids and cavities you can’t reach with a can, so a surface spray kills the few you see and misses the source. Treating the harbourage is what actually reduces them.
